Configure the Windows XP Firewall

Before you begin

You may want to read our quick introduction to the Windows XP Firewall. The Windows XP Firewall is included with Windows XP Service Pack 2. If your copy of Windows XP is updated regularly with Automatic Updates, then you probably have the Windows XP Firewall installed.

By default, the firewall blocks all traffic coming into your computer. It is up to you to allow traffic in on a case by case basis. You do this by either Allowing Programs, or Allowing Ports. Allowing Programs is much easier, and is the recommended method.

The Windows XP Firewall does not provide any sort of outgoing connection control, and as such it is only half of a total firewall solution. It is, however, a very effective incoming connection firewall and should be used if you have no other incoming connection control.

How To Configure the Windows XP Firewall

You can configure the firewall by allowing programs to communicate with the web. This is the default method, and is generally best for most people.

You can configure the firewall by allowing ports to communicate with the web. This is a more advanced method, and is generally best for more advanced users.
