Firewalling for the NVidia ActiveArmor Firewall

Before we can open ports for Ares, we need to figure out what ports ares is using. Here is a brief walkthrough on how to do that.

Open up Ares. Then click the Control Panel icon in the toolbar at the top of your screen.

You should see a bunch of tabs close to the top of this window. One of these tabs should be labeled Transfer. Go ahead and click it now.

Enter the port you want Ares to use into the Accept incoming connections on port box. By default this port is set to 1157. You can change it to whatever you like, or leave it set to 1157.

Please enter the port you chose for Ares below.

I've heard of and experienced this firewall causing "out of memory" errors with some programs. Just be aware of that when using this firewall. Go ahead and open up the Nvidia ActiveArmor Firewall.

Click the View the current Profile link.

In the main section of this page change the Security Profiles to one of the custom configurations. Put a dot in to the Re-generate profile based on radio button. I chose medium here, but you can choose any of the profiles to base your custom profile off of. Then click the Apply button at the bottom of this page. You should see a status page as the firewall generates the custom configuration settings. When it is finished you should find yourself back at the Firewall Basic Configuration Page. Now click the Firewall link on the left hand side of this page. Then click the Advanced Configuration link. Then click the UDP/TCP Port link in the left hand menu.

The default TCP/UDP port inbound action drop down box should be set to deny. Click the Add button on the bottom of this page. Then enter the settings as shown below.
UDP/TCP Port - Add Rule
Name

Any Remote IP Address
Specify Remote IP address and/or mask
Remote IP Address
Remote IP subnet mask

Beginning Port Number {min 0, max 65535}

Ending Port Number {min 0, max 65535}

Port Protocol

Click the Apply button to save that rule. That should be it. The firewall should be properly configured.
